Project log 3 - King of Bling
It's all been about Dwarfs recently. They will make an appearance early in the campaign futilely trying to defend against the awoken might of Durin's Bane, Smaug then serving them an eviction notice and then the three linked scenarios representing the Battle of Azanulbizarl. So they are at the top of the need to be painted list.

Ive had an army of Thror tucked away untouched for a few years now, always on the eternal 'to do list'. I mainly picked them up because one, I loved the sculpts, and two, because they were the cheaper Dwarf army option. Both those reasons remain valid and they will serve as the main bulk of any Dwarfs we need for the campaign. I love the other two Dwarf armies, Iron Hills and Kazad-Dum, but both are expensive and in some cases are hard to get hold of.
Although the army of Thror lacks a lot of variety compared to the other two armies it received a significant power boost in the new army book. The main boost was the buff to Grim Hammers, who have been desperate for 'something' to elevate them beyond mediocrity since they came out.
The main boost is as long as you take Thror, and I can't imagine ever not taking Thror if fielding an army of Erebor, then 18 Grim Hammers can be upgraded to the King's Guard gaining +1 STR. Awesome.
So where better to start painting than the 18 Grim Hammers.
I messed around for ages trying to come up with a colour scheme. I knew I wanted the 18 King's Guard to stand out from the others so considering that Thror is the richest dude in Middle Earth and has a taste for all things bling felt his personal guard needed bronze/gold plate email effect. Leaving the normal Grim Hammers in the standard silver/chainmail.
Basing I used some resin flagstone bases that are cracked in places. I painted these progressing lighter shades of grey and then applied a green glaze to reflect the jade green floors you see in the movie during the Erebor scenes and in my imagination the cracks are because they are defending against the attack of Smaug who is in the midst of wrecking the place.
Painting this army will likely take the next three months with the odd distraction to do something else.
My collection consists of
Thor
Thrain
Young Thorin
Young Dwalin
Grim Hammer Captain
24 Grim Hammers
24 Erebor Warriors.
At a later date I may add some of the Iron Hills range to it, likely a chariot.
In other news, after a few false starts and a slight delay we will at last be starting the campaign with the Battle of the Last alliance, this Friday evening 29th March.
